How does Nexium work?

Nexium was introduced in 2001 as the improved version of the medication that has up to then been one of the best sold medications in the world, Prilosec. Prilosec was the first proton pump inhibitor on the market and it successfully replaced the previous class of drugs that were used for treating conditions exacerbated by gastric acid, the H2-receptor antagonists that were found too inefficient. It took not too long for generic Nexium to replace Prilosec as the PPI of choice for many doctors. It was found to be more efficient than Prilosec, especially in people who weren’t responding to the treatment with Prilosec.

Gastric acid is produced in the stomach and its function is to break down proteins, mainly. The more precise place where gastric acid is produced is in the parietal cells in the stomach.

The acidity of gastric acid is maintained by an enzyme which is known as ATPase. This enzyme is also known as proton pump of the gastric parietal cells. Proton pump inhibitors act on this enzyme and prevent the production of gastric acid. This is how these medications got its name. The differences between different proton pump inhibitors are too miniscule and too complicated to explain. However, it has been proven that Nexium is significantly more efficient than other PPIs in inhibiting the production of gastric acid.

You are now probably asking why this is so important. The simple fact is that gastric acid is the main cause of symptoms in conditions such as GERD, peptic ulcers as well as dyspepsia and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

In GERD, for example, it is gastric acid that gets access to the esophagus through the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter which prevents this from happening in healthy individuals.

As gastric acid comes into contact with the tissue in the esophagus, it causes symptoms such as heartburn and can even lead to damage to the esophagus. In cases of duodenal and gastric ulcers, gastric acid is free to act on the lining of the stomach in places where the mucus that usually protects the lining is compromised as a result of bacterial infections, use of certain drugs and other causes. This causes the pain that is felt by the patients suffering from ulcers.

Dyspepsia, or indigestion as it is more commonly called is mostly caused by the aforementioned conditions and it has its range of symptoms, from pain to bloating and nausea. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a combination of ulcerations, hypersecretion of gastric acid and tumors of the pancreas. Certain symptoms of this condition, such as pain are caused by gastric acid. In all of these cases, the inhibition of the production of gastric acid brings much relief and that is why proton pump inhibitors are used for these conditions. And as Nexium online is the most efficient among them, it is the best course of action in all of these conditions.
